About Therapy

Therapy provides the opportunity to significantly reduce or eliminate behaviors and/or feelings that cause distress, thereby improving your quality of life.

Therapy is a collaborative process that involves evaluation, goal-setting, problem solving, and skills building.  In the first two or three visits, the focus is on clarifying the reasons you came to therapy, obtaining relevant family and individual history, identifying strengths, and preliminary goal setting.  It also provides the opportunity for you to decide whether you feel comfortable working with me and for me to determine if I can help you achieve your goals.

Several methods may be used, depending on the individual.  These methods are client-centered and include motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral therapy.  What sets me apart from most other practices is that I strive to use “evidence-based methods”, methods that have been effective both in research settings and in practice settings.

Changing behaviors and feelings is not easy but many of the most valuable things in life require hard, persistent work to obtain.  In my view, change is likely to occur given adequate recognition of the severity of the problem(s) and a commitment to making and maintaining a change.  The book Changing for Good that you’ll find on the “Recommended Resources” page is helpful for getting an understanding of the change process.
